Paul Basic

Hi Everyone, Jonathan here.
On September 28 Paul basic released his first album entitled The Mirror. Paul Basic is on the Pretty Lights Label and has 8 great new songs on the album. Basic decided to put the entire album out for free in order to increase listening and get his name out there. I think that within the next year Paul Basic will be a well known name in the electronic music world, and soon he will hopefully be releasing some new remixes on top of his current album. This week he is a featured artist on thissongissick.com so check him out if you want to know more. Recommended tracks include track number five Doozy, and track number three Daydream. Stay classy guys, and watch our for new WLTL blogs!

Coffee

Hey Camille here!

As I am writing this is it 9:20 AM, am I tired? Nope! That is because of my recent coffee addiction. My love affair with the caffeinated miracle started my freshman year. At Starbucks I converted from hot chocolate to a pumpkin spice latte and my world was transformed. Getting these fun seasonal drinks was a treat. But, they are expensive and as a high school student I wouldn't dare waking up early to travel to Starbucks for a $4 coffee drink. I decided to take the cheaper coffee route, skip the mocha chocka lata blah blah and just get straight up coffee. This was new for me, but after a cup I felt great. My mother was alright with the whole coffee thing, but my dad hated it! He still does. "It'll stunt your growth". He says, and a bunch of other things that I don't remember. I blame high school for my recent addiction. Waking up early on weekends for club events, staying up late due to club events...yeah it's basically my extra curricular activities that force me to stay caffeinated. Now don't get me wrong, I don't drink five cups a day. It's one cup in the morning, and maybe two cups on an early Saturday morning. Overall I would defiantly say that because of coffee I can stay focused in class. I'm not falling asleep while learning about a math function.

The Go Round Interview Success

This past Thursday, September 22nd, WLTL welcomed their first band of the year into the studio, the rising indie band The Go Round. WLTL was lucky enough to snag an interview and in-studio performance with the band.

The Go Round is a Brooklyn based indie band who released their EP, “Eastern Parkway”, last Tuesday, September 20th. The band played at the Elbo Room concert venue in downtown Chicago following the interview, and is currently touring many other cities.

The interview was conducted by me [Lisa Jonas] and Teddy Salazar. Though nervous for our first interview of the year in the studio, as well as the bands first radio interview, it was a great time. We got to know the members Brandon, Rich, Scott, and Theo and see what made the group come together to form their style. The band features an acoustic sound on their first record, “Gone”, but their newest EP contains a newer distinct sound due to the addition of Scott on drums and Theo on fiddle.

The band performed songs from both “Gone” and “Eastern Parkway”. Check out their performance of “Mammoth” from their website below! And as always, listen to WLTL to hear more of The Go Round and other new music!

Review of the NFL

Football is back.  People can finally stop going to church and sit on their to couch to watch some good old fashion football.  One thing that I’m disappointed in is that I haven’t seen Peyton Manning take the field.  Without him, the Colts are lost, now 0 and 2.  If Peyton  Manning does not return to the Colts, then you can kiss their playoff hopes good bye.  Another thing that I am disappointed, but not surprised, is the Bears offensive line.  Martz was raving about there new and improved offensive line and how they will protect Cutler.  The past weeks game against the Saints showed a true face of the offensive line against a good time.  The offensive line let up more than five sacks last game against plus all the times that he was rushed.  One bright spot during the game though was Matt Forte.  With his rushing yards combined with the receiving yards, he is a dynamic back, as seen in Week 1 where he single handedly changed the game against the Falcons.  My final disappointment is Ryan Grant this year so far.  The running back for the Green Bay Packers hasn’t had a great impact for them this year.  With only about fourty yards in the 2 wins for the Packers isn’t a game changer.  Put in James Starks and see if he can offer more as a starter.  You can hear more about this on the Thursday Night Sports Show on WLTL 88.1 FM

Ahh My Feet No Longer Hurt!

Oh hi didn’t see you there. Well you probably are wondering why my feet hurt. Tonight I was able to go see this band called Kids These days. Kids These Days was the break out band of Lollapalooza 2011. I was fortunate enough to see them at Lollapalooza, but that’s not what I’m here to talk about or reminisce the epicness of seeing them live on that hot August day. No tonight I was able to see them again live at DePaul University in Chicago. Me and several other managers took the train down town to see them tonight for free in the student center. They were absolutely exceptional as was expected out of a band of their caliber, but what really shocked me was the stage presence the band brought. We got to the student center about thirty minutes early, and it was like any other college common area students eating relaxing working and just being college students on a Wednesday night. At exactly six the band went on, and it was like a giant magnet had been switched on. People were sucked down the stairs and pulled away from the walls to the center of the building. The music sucked everyone in form every corner of the room. The crowd quickly grew from 50 people to a couple of hundred in a matter of minutes. The band just sucked you in with Vic Mensa smooth lyrics and Nico Segal and J.P. Floyd passionately blasting their collective hearts out, or dancing them out. By the end of their one-hour set the air in the room was electric filled happiness and good times.

This wasn’t only because every note Macie Stewart’s voice was hypnotizing, or every nuance of
Liam Cunningham’s voice was just as stunning. No it was because they wanted to be there in front of their fans new and old. To often today we see bands form hit it big and dissolve so quickly after they make a quick buck off a single, or change drastically because they lose who they are for the money. So then they conform to a certain sound for a record label to be marketable I don’t for see this problem for KTD because they aren’t in it for the money they are in it for the love of music and each other. The energy around them is amazing whether you see them with several thousand of your closest friends at lollapalooza or with a few hundred at a local college. When you see Kids These Days it doesn’t feel like some mass marketed pop band where they go on stage and its work. When Kids These Days steps on stage it feels like best friends having the time of their life doing what they love. Definitely keep Kids These Days on your radar. So yeah in a nutshell my feet hurt from going to see this awesome band.

So go check them out!! Now!

Hope you love them as much as I do,

North Coast Music Festival

Hey everyone, Jonathan in the house!

In case you guys didn't know Labor day weekend was the North Coast Music Festival! I wasn't able to go last year but my friend was lucky enough to win two VIP tickets to the festival and gave one to me! The festival got started on friday when David Guetta and Wolfgang Gartner played, although the music didn't start until four and I didn't get there until six it was still an amazing night. Saturday started off with Zed's Dead followed by one of my personal favorite shows RJD2 with Break Science, then Big Gigantic, Future Rock, Rusko, plus STS9 and Fatboy Slim headlining at the end of the night! Sunday started with Lateryx, then paper Diamond (another favorite of mine), followed by Of Montreal, Benny Benassi, and headlining was the crowd favorite Bassnectar, as well as my personal favorite artist, Thievery Corperation. All in all it was an amazing festival, and unlike other festivals this summer the heat wasn't a killer!

For a list of the full lineup refer to the website: http://lineup.northcoastfestival.com/

I highly reccommend listening to some of the bands on my list if you like awesome music!

Ah the Golden Age

Tonight is the start of Fall Premier Week on TV.  But if you want some real fun, 1930s style, you need to ditch the TV and listen to a radio drama.

Check out http://www.oldworldradio.com and listen to some of the old time radio drama's they have up on their site.  You see kids, back when radio was just getting started, music was no where to be found (or at least not like it is today anyway).  Radio drama programs were kings of the airwaves...until TV came along.  I am a history buff, at least a media history buff anyway.  I find this stuff not only interesting but quite frankly downright entertaining as well.

Not sure where to start?  Check out this episode of The Shadow:

This is a classic from 1943 that you are sure to enjoy.  And if you do like it, visit Old World Radio...they have tons more mp3 files you can legally download and listen to from The Shadow and many more classic radio performers.  Enjoy!

Homecoming...or BASSNECTAR!?

Greetings blog-readers,

I'm the co-music director Collin Thomas, and a recent realization has me quite peeved as of late. I'm sure you are glowing with excitement over what can be impacting me so much, and you're in luck because I'm in a story telling mood. As an LTHS student, we only get 9 "big" dances in our 4 years here. By big I mean the annual Homecoming and King of Hearts dances open to all of us here at LT, plus our Senior Prom. Coming from a school that hosted at least one dance a month, I've always looked forward to the chance to groove to some tasty beats once again. Most of my friends her at LT have shared that love of dance with me until this year. The reason being is the explosion of techno confetti who is Bassnectar is returning to our lovely state on October 1st, which is the same day as our lovely Homecoming gathering. My executive decision sides with the dance of course, seeing as though Bassnectar tours twice a year and almost always stops in Illinois. But is it right for to judge those who hate on semi-formal gatherings to make way for super mega DJ fun? Of course not. Because this is a semi-factual, non-opinonated blog entry for WLTL, 88.1 La Grange! And no matter what you all decide, I wish you the best in your October 1st endeavors.

Love,
Collin Thomas
